DigiD Guide for Expats
How to set up your DigiD, activate it, and use it to file your Dutch taxes online. A step-by-step guide for expats in the Netherlands.
DigiD (Digital Identity) is the Dutch government's online authentication system. Think of it as your digital passport for all government services โ including filing your taxes at the Belastingdienst.
You need a DigiD to access these key services:
| Service | Website | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| Mijn Belastingdienst | belastingdienst.nl | File tax return, view assessments, manage payment plans |
| Mijn Toeslagen | toeslagen.nl | Apply for and manage toeslagen |
| MijnOverheid | mijnoverheid.nl | Receive official government letters digitally |
| Gemeente (Municipality) | Varies by city | Register address changes, order documents |
| UWV (Employee Insurance) | uwv.nl | Unemployment, disability, and sick leave claims |
| SVB (Social Insurance Bank) | svb.nl | Check AOW pension, kinderbijslag |
| DUO (Education) | duo.nl | Student finance, diploma recognition |
| Healthcare portals | Various | Access medical records, repeat prescriptions |
How to Register
Follow these steps to create your DigiD account:
- Go to digid.nl โ Visit digid.nl/en and click "Apply for DigiD."
- Enter your BSN โ Your Burger Service Nummer (citizen service number), which you received when you registered at the gemeente.
- Choose a username and password โ Pick a unique username (minimum 6 characters) and a strong password.
- Provide your email and phone number โ Used for two-factor authentication and account recovery.
- Submit โ An activation letter will be sent to your registered address.
Activation by Letter
After registering, the Belastingdienst sends an activation letter to the address registered in the BRP (Basic Registration of Persons). This letter contains a one-time activation code.
- Wait for the letter โ Usually arrives within 1โ5 business days (within the Netherlands). International delivery can take 1โ3 weeks.
- Log in to digid.nl โ Use the username and password you created during registration.
- Enter the activation code โ Type the code from the letter to activate your account.
- Set up SMS verification โ Add your mobile number for two-factor authentication (recommended).
Using DigiD for Tax Filing
Once your DigiD is activated, you can use it to file your Dutch taxes:
- Go to mijn.belastingdienst.nl
- Click "Inloggen" (Log in)
- Select "DigiD" as your login method
- Enter your DigiD username and password
- Complete the SMS verification (or use the DigiD app)
- You will be redirected to your personal tax portal with pre-filled data
Your employer and banks have already submitted your income and account data to the Belastingdienst, so much of the tax return will be pre-filled. Review, complete, and submit.
The DigiD App
The DigiD app provides a faster and more secure authentication level. DigiD offers three security levels, and some services require a higher level:
| Auth Level | Method | Security | Accepted By |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basis | Username + password | โญ | Most government services |
| Midden | Username + password + SMS code | โญโญ | Belastingdienst, healthcare |
| Substantieel | DigiD app + ID document scan (NFC) | โญโญโญ | All services, including healthcare portals requiring highest security |
The DigiD app is especially convenient during tax season when you may need to log into the Belastingdienst portal multiple times. Download it from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and scan your passport or ID card using NFC to activate.
Troubleshooting
Forgot your username or password
Go to digid.nl and click "Forgot username" or "Forgot password." You will need your BSN and a new activation letter will be sent.
Account blocked after 3 failed login attempts
Your account is automatically blocked after 3 failed attempts. Wait 15 minutes and try again, or request account recovery.
SMS verification code not arriving
Ensure your phone number is correct in your DigiD settings. Also check that your phone can receive international SMS messages โ some international SIMs block Dutch short codes.
Moved to a new address
DigiD is linked to your BRP registration. After moving, update your address at the gemeente. A new activation letter may be required if the gemeente change process triggers a re-verification.
